It’s autumn, whether I like it or not
There’s definitely less light
I’m tired
Exhausted, really
The grief weighs down my bones like iron
I don’t like knowing these words –
Suffering
Loss
Death
I think to myself,
“I’m never going to get through this”
But, somehow, I keep going
It’s like a disaster –
A hurricane
A tornado
A flood
Yet, it’s as natural as breathing
It’s definitely autumn, whether I like it or not
I feel alone in the increasing dark
Saying no is not an option here
But can I say yes to life?
And to letting go?
There is a purpose to the Universe –
A controlled fall
I don’t want to forget you
Or to forget my sorrow
It’s autumn, whether I like it or not
There’s definitely less light
And seasons change
HSB has facilitated the “Healing Through Poetry” group for more than 10 years. Peri Longo, past Santa Barbara poet laureate, supports individuals in grief to express themselves through poetry.
